How Much for a Web Site?

We get that question a lot. And, unfortunately, there’s no easy answer—for you, nor for us. Here’s why…

Let’s say I want to buy a car from you, and all I ask you is “how much for a car?” Whatcha gonna say? …Yep. That’s what we thought.

It is in fact impossible to price any product or service without first defining its scope. Check out the lowest-priced used car on Edmund’s right now—the 1997 GMC Sonoma at the time of this writing. Now jot down all the specifications for it: make, model, year, mileage, accessories, etc. Do you find that’s a good price for it? Now do the same for the most expensive production street car on the market this year, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sports  which retails for $2,400,000. Too expensive? Why? Is it because both of these cars will perform the same fundamental function a car has to perform: get its passengers from point A to point B, and that’s why you’re buying a car?

What’s with the price difference?

R&D and manufacturing costs account for some of that difference, no doubt. Now, I’m no “gear head,” but I’m pretty darned sure that they don’t account for the entire difference (especially since the base Veyron costs $1,700,000, or $700,000 ∆). My guess is these two cars are in fact created with very different scopes in mind.

The function of the Veyron extends far beyond that of the function of the ’97 Sonoma. Besides being able to reach 60 mph in only 2.5 seconds, and to travel at over 260 mph, the Veyron is priced for what the market will pay for it. The folks at Bugatti who design and manufacture the Veyron take into consideration what a person, who will pay that kind of money, wants from this car. The cost far exceeds the “how much for a car” price, and yet is justifiable to the buyer because it performs the required function. It makes you and I talk about it. It makes us look at the buyer as someone special, powerful, or what you will. The Veyron delivers on all counts, and is worth every penny.
